Crowds, calling themselves English, Welsh Defense League and Casuals United tried to create some chaos at the city centre in Birmingham. Witnesses claimed that the protests went along for about two and a half hours. Youth were trying to damage properties and managed to create trouble to one car.
Another group which came off on the other part of the city wanted to create counter protests and got themselves into trouble. Pictures of youth beating up others who were not involved and raising slogans against the fascists and Nazis hit the papers the next day. Nearly 31 people were arrested in these protests.
Last month’s protests against Islamic fundamentalism were calm and peaceful, the officers said. Many commented that these protests were similar to the ones that took place in early 1970s and 1980s. Some people said the violence was systematic as they arrived in cars and started their disheartening job.
