New Strain of HIV discovered

French Doctors in Washington found a new HIV strain which is quite different from the HIV-1 strain, has more similarities to the gorillas’ strains that were discovered recently. The HIV – 1 strain was found in the Chimpanzees, named Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV) and is believed to have transferred into humans in Democratic Republic of Congo, where similar cases were first reported, after humans came in contact with bush meat, back in 1980s.
Since HIV targets immune cells and the people who have herpes sores had more immune cell activity where HIV reproduces 3 – 5 times faster in the normal environment, this suggested new direction for HIV research. While the woman in Cameroon, had no contact with any gorilla, it is sure that she had it from some other person. As the new virus cannot be detected by traditional tests there is no possibility of its identification. So there are chances for the disease to have been spread already.
Thus it is clear that HIV evolution is a never ending process and as researched and found earlier pathogens change their hosts while they move from primate to primate, and from species to species. But until now the patient is not ill although she possesses the new virus.
